Join us at SREE 2022!

Join the Research Alliance next week at the 2022 Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness (SREE) conference. This year’s theme is “From Reckoning to Racial Justice: Centering Underserved Communities in Research on Educational Effectiveness.” NYU Steinhardt is a Silver sponsor of the conference and will host a reception after the Hedges lecture at 7:00PM EST on Thursday, September 22. Then, on Friday, September 23rd, Research Alliance scholars will share their work in sessions on Career and Technical Education and student homelessness.

The Research Alliance is also pleased to announce that Executive Director James Kemple has been named as the incoming president of SREE. Learn more about Dr. Kemple's appointment, as well as the Research Alliance’s conference sessions, on our website.

Learn More About Research Alliance Projects and Partnerships

We recently reorganized the Projects page on our website! You can now browse our projects by student population or topic area, or scroll through a full list of current and past projects. In addition to a wide range of studies being led by members of the Research Alliance team, we are proud to play a supporting role in work being conducted by other scholars in NYC and across the country. Examples include:

The P-TECH Evaluation. MDRC is conducting a study of the NYC P-TECH Grades 9-14 school model. P-TECH schools provide an enriched curriculum aligned with specific employment opportunities. Students also have access to professional mentors, workplace experiences, and internships, and can earn both a high school diploma and a cost-free Associate degree in six years. The Research Alliance is supporting MDRC’s work by advising on research design and analyses, helping identify appropriate samples for the study, and constructing data files needed to evaluate P-TECH’s implementation and impact.

The Center for the Success of English Learners (CSEL).  CSEL conducts research aimed at identifying and removing barriers to English learners’ access to rigorous instruction. The Research Alliance is supporting Dr. Michael Kieffer's work leading CSEL’s policy strand. This research explores how policies, structures, and system-level practices may constrain or enhance secondary English Learners' access to the general curriculum.

In Case You Missed It: Examining the Impact of NYC's Teacher and School Leaders Program

For many years, schools in the Bronx have faced challenges related to teacher recruitment and retention, as well as student achievement. In 2017, to address these issues, the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) launched the Teacher and School Leaders Bronx Human Capital Initiative (TSL). TSL was designed to help build a “highly prepared, committed and diverse” teacher workforce, retain effective teachers, and support strong recruitment and retention practices in 363 schools across the borough. The Research Alliance conducted an independent evaluation of TSL’s impact on teacher and student outcomes. We found that TSL substantially improved teacher retention, and one of its core components—the Teacher Leadership program—significantly enhanced participants' effectiveness in the classroom.
