2017 at the Research Alliance: A Year in Review

This year, the Research Alliance worked with thousands of students, teachers, administrators, community leaders, and policymakers to develop and carry out research that informs New York City on topics that matter to our public schools. We are grateful to the many collaborators and generous funders who made this work possible. Here are some of our highlights from 2017:

Celebrating the one-year anniversary of our Spotlight on NYC Schools series, which offers short, descriptive data analysis and visualizations designed to inject evidence into public education debates and raise important questions for future research. Topics we’ve explored in 2017 include:

Publishing new research reports and practice guides, including:

New York City Goes to College: New Findings and Framework for Examining College Access and Success, which provides an in-depth look at high school students’ pathways into and through college, revealing large improvements in college access, but also highlighting persistent inequities for historically underrepresented groups of students.
More Than an Application: How Two NYC High Schools Work with Students and Parents on the Road to College and Learning Out Loud: Elevating Students Voices in Education, which both draw on the experiences of high schools participating in NYC’s Expanded Success Initiative.
iMentor’s College Ready Program: Examining Implementation and Impacts for 10th Graders, which was just released this week and explores the 10th grade implementation and impact of iMentor’s College Ready Program at eight NYC high schools.

Engaging educators, students, researchers and district leaders, in part by:

Co-hosting a conference exploring system-wide efforts to improve educational outcomes for Black and Latino young men in eight cities, supported by the American Educational Research Association;
Presenting Research Alliance findings at universities and conferences around the nation; and
Conducting hundreds of interviews, focus groups and surveys at schools across the City, including more than 500 schools surveyed as part of our Computer Science for All evaluation.

Launching new projects that will we continue to advance in 2018, including studies of:

NYC’s career technical education (CTE) programs;
The Internationals Network for Public Schools, which serves recently arrived immigrant students with low levels of English language proficiency;
Borders Crossers, which aims to disrupt racism by empowering educators through professional development, training, and coaching; and
The Maker Partnership, which focuses on helping elementary teachers integrate computer science and computational thinking into their regular science classes using maker pedagogy.
