The Research Alliance for New York City Schools invites you to attend:
High School Persisters: Exploring the Needs and Experiences of Students Who Don’t Graduate in Four Years, But Remain Enrolled
Thursday, June 7, 2018
4-6 p.m.
Kimmel Center, Silver Board Room, New York University
60 Washington Square South, New York, NY

The Research Alliance is releasing findings from a new study designed to help policymakers and the public better understand the challenges faced by students who have fallen behind and are at risk of aging out of the public school system. How many of these students are there in NYC? How are these students different from those who graduate on time, and those who drop out in their first four years? What are persisting students’ pathways through the system? Where do they fall off track, and what kind of support might make a difference for their educational trajectories?

Join us for a presentation by the Research Alliance’s Kathryn Hill and Zitsi Mirakhur; a roundtable discussion with persisting students; and a panel exploring the implications of this new research for policy and practice. The panel will feature:

Moderator:
  • Charlton McIlwain, Associate Professor of Media, Culture, and Communication, New York University, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development
Panelists:
  • Michelle Costa, Chief of Staff, Policy and Evaluation, NYC Department of Education
  • Mark Dunetz, President, New Visions for Public Schools
  • Sister Paulette LoMonaco, Executive Director, Good Shepherd Services

This event is free, but registration is required. Please RSVP by May 31.
About the Research Alliance’s Equity, Access and Diversity Series

This event is part of our new Equity, Access and Diversity series, which aims to illuminate important areas of progress as well as stubborn barriers to equity, access and diversity in NYC public schools. Developed in recognition of the Research Alliance’s 10th Anniversary (in November 2018), the series focuses on students who are underrepresented, vulnerable, or historically underserved. For each topic addressed as part of the series, we are using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to examine factors contributing to educational inequality—and to identify promising strategies to produce more equitable learning opportunities and outcomes.

The Research Alliance for New York City Schools is a nonpartisan research center housed at the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. The Research Alliance conducts rigorous studies on topics that matter to the city’s public schools. The organization strives to advance equity and excellence in education by providing evidence about policies and practices that promote students' development and academic success.
