Back to School With the Research Alliance
Here’s a quick look at what the Research Alliance has been working on as we gear up for a new school year:

Sharing our Findings: Senior Research Associate Adriana Villavicencio talked to NY1 Noticias about the latest findings from our study of the Expanded Success Initiative, and to El Diario about some of the unique challenges facing Latino high school students in NYC.

Creating Individualized Reports for Schools: Each fall, we develop a set of individualized reports for schools participating in our studies, as a way to thank schools for opening their doors to us, and to share some of what we're learning. This summer, we held focus groups with principals so that we could make our reports as helpful as possible. Using their feedback, we're finalizing the reports, which we’ll be sharing with schools participating in our evaluations of iMentor’s College Ready Program and ESI in the next few weeks.

Thinking about Parent Involvement: This week, The New York Times profiled efforts to engage parents in the City’s schools. The Research Alliance’s 2014 report on keys to success in NYC’s small high schools outlined a number of strategies that schools use “to build genuine relationships with students’ parents and families, rather than just communicating with them.” These included hiring support staff to work with families at the school, conducting home visits, and using online tools to keep parents informed of their child’s progress.

Connecting with Research Practice Partnerships: Vanessa Coca represented the Research Alliance at the most recent convening of a growing number of Research-Practice Partnerships across the country. The August meeting featured the launch of the National Education Research-Practice Partnerships network, which will provide formal support for emerging partnerships between school districts and researchers. Executive Director Dr. James Kemple will serve on NERPP's Steering Committee.

Reflecting on Race and Identity in Education: Post-Doctoral Fellow Tony Laing released an essay for the African American Intellectual History Society blog: "Reflections on Black Masculinity: Struggles and Triumphs".
The Research Alliance for New York City Schools is a nonpartisan research center housed at the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. The Research Alliance conducts rigorous studies on topics that matter to the city’s public schools. The organization strives to advance equity and excellence in education by providing evidence about policies and practices that promote students' development and academic success.
