"We take things personally when we agree with the things that people say about us, whether good or bad."

Taking things personally makes the assumption that everything is all about you. The truth is, any opinion people give you about yourself is coming from their own feelings, beliefs, and opinions, their commitments, and the input they received as they grew up. It's a projection onto you.

Knowing what you think, what your feel, and what your opinion is, is yours and no one else's. The converse is also true. Their thoughts, opinions and feelings are theirs and how they see the world and how you see the world are not the same. We all speak out of our own experience and thoughts and reveal ourselves even when we try to project on to others.

Taking what others say about you personally is emotional kryptonite. When you remember that their opinion is about them and not you, you can remain centered and stable no matter what others say or think.
