Dealing with Muddy Airbrush Colors
When you throw a bunch of colors together the result is usually something resembling mud. Small wonder, because mixing just two colors together results in a loss of saturation (color intensity). Its very easy to move from a pure "straight-out-of-the-bottle" color on the outside of the color wheel (above left image), towards a gray or other neutral color near the center. But try to go from the center of the color wheel outwards (above right image), and its a different story. It is much more difficult to move a color from a grayish unsaturated state to an intense state. It's almost as if the center of the color wheel represents a black hole from which it is difficult to escape.

The reason for this is simple: contamination. Intense colors are usually more "pure" regarding pigment. In other words, they contain fewer other colors to contaminate them. Introducing another color, especially a complementary color, will move a pure color quickly away from the edge of the color wheel, and into a less saturated zone. However, if you start with a muddy color near the center, adding more color does not remove the existing contamination, so the journey away from the center of the color wheel is more difficult.

The solution? Start out painting with purer, more saturated colors. Its easy to desaturate a color by simply adding its complement. It is not as easy to increase saturation, due to the presence of contamination. Therefore, I paint a little bit "hot" with regards to color intensity, because it is quick and easy to remove excess saturation.

Good luck with your upcoming projects!
