Subject: Why most FAIL to memorise the Quran

Assalaamualikum Friend,

I once attended a Quran Party of a 7-year-old girl who completed the memorisation of the last Juz (30th part of the Quran).

I was curious. Having memorised the Quran myself, I knew the hard work which goes behind it and was wondering how much the young girl had actually retained. So I pulled the mother aside and asked, “Has she REALLY memorised it all?”

The mother dropped her head and said, “No. Her school puts so much focus on memorising new chapters, that they forget to revise the old ones. Truth is, she can’t even recall much of what she’s memorised now.”

SubhanaAllah.

The failure to REVISE is one of the biggest downfalls and de-motivating factors for everyone who embarks on the journey to memorise the Quran.

The guilt of forgetting chapters of the Quran or the fear of incorrectly pronouncing a word during prayer is REAL.

Here are 3 ways you can overcome this hurdle and give REVISION its due right.

1) Understand the importance of REVISING what you learn.

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, "You must keep on reciting the Quran because it escapes from the hearts of men faster than tied camels." [Sahih al-Bukhari]

Forgetting what you have memorised is a sign of neglect. The moment we disregard and forget the revision of Quran, it will escape from our memory. For that reason, it’s imperative for us to continuously revise what we learn in order to retain it in its complete and perfect form.

2) Know that revision will get EASIER over time.

The more you revise, the stronger your memory for that particular Surah will become. That means, the next time you recite that Surah, it will be a little easier than the time before (Insha'Allah).

It’s like the one who engraves on stone. The more times she hits the stone, the deeper the engraving gets and the longer it will last. Similarly, revision strengthens your memory.

3) Understand that revision is an opportunity to attain REWARD from Allah (SWT).

Revising the Quran involves you reciting the Quran which is an act of worship, The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten.” [Tirmidhi]

Therefore, don’t belittle the importance of revising the Quran because in that time of intense recitation, there is an opportunity to connect deeply with Allah (SWT) and gain immense reward for doing so.

4) Have an action plan.

Aim to revise what you have memorised daily, if not then at the minimum it should be done on a weekly basis. Have a plan to go over everything that you learn on a consistent basis so that it doesn’t escape from your memory.

Honestly speaking, the portion size you commit to will depend on your memorisation capacity and how much you have already memorised. That’s why it helps to speak to a teacher to devise a workable plan that suits your pace and lifestyle.
