Subject: Hadith # 9: “What I Have forbidden You, Avoid...”

Assalamualaykum Friend,

We pray this email finds you well in both eeman and health.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah Abdur’Rahman ibn Sakhr (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying”: “What I have forbidden you, stay away from. What I have ordered you to do, is do as much of it as you can. Verily, the people before you were destroyed only because of their excessive questioning and disagreement with their prophets”.

 [Reported in Bukhari and Muslim]

In this hadith, our Prophet ﷺ has highlighted one of the most important concepts of acceptance of deeds by Allah. Here, our Prophet ﷺ tells us whether a good deed you do would be accepted and whether or not it would be pleasing to Allah. You also learn when and how your dua would be accepted.

This hadith reinforces the points mentioned in hadith number 6 where our Prophet ﷺ laid down a list of criteria from which a Muslim can decide whether something is permissible or not. This hadith goes on to lay principles that can be applied in all aspects of one's life.

This Hadith is a foundation of manners, behavior and etiquette in Islam. Some say this is half of Islam because Islam is either about doing something or abstaining from something. This Hadith states that a believer should avoid things that are of no benefit to this life nor to the hereafter, in terms of belief, speech and/or actions.

Blessed to serve you on your Qur'an journey,
