Subject: Hadith #3: Islam Is Built On Five

Assalamualaykum Friend,

We pray this email finds you well in both eeman and health.

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say:

“Islam is built upon five [pillars]: testifying that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayers, giving the Zakah, making the pilgrimage to the House and fasting in the month of Ramadan." [Bukhari & Muslim]

This hadith lays the basis for fundamental aspects of outward submission to Allah.

If your foundation is strong, you’ve built a pretty good base to get started.

If your foundation is weak, you need to work on it first before looking at other aspects of Islam.

While the original text makes it clear that the fetus goes through all three stages in the first forty days, the added word gives a different meaning. According to the wrong narration, the stages take place in the first four months.

On the authority of the Mother of the Faithful, Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whosoever introduces anything into this matter of ours (i.e. into Islam) that is not from it shall have it rejected.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

An-Numan bin Bashir who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam, say: “Truly, that which is lawful is clear, and what is unlawful is clear, and in between the two are matters which are doubtful about which many people are not knowledgeable. Thus, he who avoids these doubtful matters certainly clears himself in regards to his religion and honor.

On the authority of Tameem ibn Aus, the Prophet ﷺ said: “Religion is naseehah. The people said: “To whom?” The Prophet ﷺ said: “To Allah and to His Book, and to His messenger, and to the leaders of the Muslims and to the common folk of the Muslims.” [Muslim]
