IS IT IMPORTANT FOR A MUSLIM TO LEARN ARABIC?
The Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (saw) over the period of 23 years. The language of revelation was in Arabic. As Islam spread outside the regions of where Arabic was not the native language, the need for translations of the Quran arose.

It is believed that the first translation was during the early 7th century when Salman al-Farisi, a companion of the Prophet (saw) and the first Persian to embrace Islam, translated Surah al-Fatihah into Persian language. Fast forward to modern times, translations in 102 languages were known by 1936.

Today, millions of Muslims whose mother tongue is not Arabic can read the Quran in their language. This then begs the question, is it important for a Muslim to learn Arabic and understand the Quran in its original language?

To help answer this question, Quran Academy has interviewed Nihal Khan, an Arabic teacher from New Jersey. Below are highlights of our conversation with him.
SURAH FATIHA - THE GREATEST SURAH IN THE QURAN
Let me start by asking you this: How often do you communicate with your best friend - every day, multiple times in a day or maybe, once in two days at least? You probably share everything about your life and its happenings, the sorrows and grief, the happiness and peace, the difficulty in accomplishing something to the joy in experiencing the little to big blessings that has been poured upon you. You would perhaps read their messages on Facebook, WhatsApp and every other social media app that’s been installed on your phone many times over.

Now, how often do you talk to Allah? How often do you share your joys and sorrows with Him? What if I told you about the greatest surah[1] in the Quran, where Allah responds to every verse you recite![2] A surah, which you recite multiple times every single day, but you probably haven’t realized the magnanimity of it yet.

We are going to talk about Al Fatihah - The first surah in the Quran, the first surah to be revealed in its entirety and a surah which almost every single Muslim knows by heart.
