Assalaamualikum Friend,

In a hadith recorded in Sahih Muslim, our Prophet Muhammad (SAW) narrates a story of three people on the Day of Judgement. The story of the second man is relevant to the people of the Quran so let’s hear it.

*************************************************

Second will be a man who studied religious knowledge. Then he taught it to others and recited the Quran. He will be brought for judgment.

Allah will remind him of His favors. He will admit them.

Then Allah will ask him: ‘What did you do with them?’

He will reply: ‘I acquired knowledge and imparted it and also recited the Quran for Your sake.’

Allah will say: ‘You have told a lie, for you got knowledge to be renowned as a scholar and you recited the Quran to be marked as a Qari.’

Then orders will be passed against him. So he will be dragged along on his face and thrown into Hell.”

*************************************************

In this Hadith is a stern warning against Riyaa: doing an action of worship to show off in front of people.

By learning the Quran for the sake of people, these people are imitating the Prophets and scholars whilst giving the false impression that they are from them when they are not. The Hadith above indicates that, on the Day of Judgement, these people will be disgraced and will be given a harsh punishment.

On the other hand, for the one who religiously works on purifying their intentions so that they are learning the Quran for the sake of Allah, for them is a great reward.

The Prophet (SAW) said: “Whoever recites one word from the Book of Allah will be rewarded for a good deed and ten more like it; and I don’t say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter but Alif is a letter and Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter”
