Subject: Wild Orchids For Kids Cancer and a Free Gift

THANKING YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT FOR KIDS CANCER AND MY CYCLE CHALLENGE
Great Cycle Challenge
Week 3 is under way. I have gone a whole week without having a crash. Long may
that last. The accident did set me back a bit especially as it made me less keen
to ride through the suburban streets. 10 days of consecutive rain has not helped
either. Because I am master of my own time, I normally postpone riding to
another sunny day. This is Australia after all.

On the donations front you have been amazing. You are creeping up to the
donation level that we achieved last year - and just short of the magical $2500 for
a Batman Super Hero jersey. I would love to sport one of those before October is over.

I am 2 days into week 3 and I have just touched 295 kms - that puts me 5 kms behind schedule for the week 2 task and already two days into week 3. It is
becoming quite clear to me that completing my challenge on my spare bike is
going to be difficult. The bike is too slow. Or maybe the 62 year old is too slow?

I will continue building the training program. The idea of a training program is to step up the distance 10% each week for the regular rides and slot in a longer ride one day a week. I did ride 46 kms into the wind on the weekend. Today I rode the hill through the National Park twice and I will keep doing a big hill twice on the rides to come. A key part also of a training program is to do some interval work and some time trial work. Interval work is typically 2 to 3 minutes of high intensity effort 2 or 3 times in a session. That is best started in weeks 4 or 5. Today I had some unintended interval work. I was passed by a friend who I cycled with a lot. He is a lot younger and fitter than me. I had to work quite a bit harder to keep up with him as we chatted all the way up the hill.

Did I find orchids?
Now I did find orchids today - same variety as last week but a new find for this week in a different location. Here it is - a donkey orchid. I did have to walk down a fire trail to find it but that fits with what I do these days. Ride to a point in the bush and then walk a loop to find orchids.

That makes me ahead on orchids - 3 found in flower and 2 types shared thus far. There is a week 3 secret to come.
Ahead on orchids is a good reason to Donate Now.
Leave your legacy and thanks in advance
$1, $5, or $50. Whatever you can give.
For some of you, this will be the first newsletter you have received on this challenge. I have updated my list from business cards you gave me or to correct bounced emails. I use this list only for personal news and for my charity challenges.

Thanks in advance and take good care

Mark
