The third longest-running film festival in the country, the Cambridge Film Festival, returns to the city on 20th October and is packed with award-winning features from across the world.

The Festival opens with THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN - which arrives in the city fresh from winning Best Screenplay and Best Actor (Colin Farrell) awards at the Venice Film Festival. It is the latest film from Martin McDonagh (In Bruges, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) and is ably supported in Cambridge by the Best Film award winners from all of Europe's major festivals.

Laura Poitras’ fascinating documentary, ALL THE BEAUTY AND THE BLOODSHED, about artist Nan Goldin and her part in the downfall of a pharmaceutical giant, took home the Golden Lion in Venice. Ruben Östlund won his second Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or with the hilarious critique of celebrity and power, TRIANGLE OF SADNESS. And the “big three” of Venice, Cannes and Berlin is completed by the beautiful ALCARRÀS, which became the first Catalan film to take the crown at Berlin International Film Festival when it secured the prestigious Golden Bear.

The award winners don't stop there! Paul Mescal stars in director Charlotte Wells’ feature debut AFTERSUN, a touching story about the relationship between a father and daughter that has received rave reviews and awards at Cannes, Melbourne, Munich and Sarajevo Film Festivals.

If animation is your thing, then the Best Feature from one of the world's most prestigious animation Festivals might be what you're looking for. LITTLE NICHOLAS, which follows the adventures of a mischievous boy, his schoolmates, teacher and parents in Paris in the 1960s, secured the top prize at Annecy International Animated Film Festival and has its UK premiere in Cambridge.

Powerful Icelandic drama BEAUTIFUL BEINGS also has its UK premiere at CFF this year and has already won awards at Festivals from Taipei to Transilvania.

In total, 29 features and shorts have their World or UK premieres at the 41st Cambridge Film Festival this month as part of an 85-film programme that includes Catalan Cinema, Classic Horror, International Festival Highlights, and even a strand called “Wildly Wonderful”.

On top of all that, Cambridge is leading the way in Film Festival diversity; for the second successive year, 50% of the films are female-directed, and the first ever “CFF Outstanding Contribution to Cinema Award” is going to cinema legend and national treasure Emma Thompson. The Festival showcases some of her most beloved films, including REMAINS OF THE DAY, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, and a rare chance to see family favourite NANNY MCPHEE on the big screen.

The Festival closes on 27th October with Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance in the multi-award-winning THE SILENT TWINS from director Agnieszka Smoczynska (whose debut feature, musical mermaid horror film THE LURE is also in the Festival).

Owen Baker from Cambridge Film Festival says: “The programming panel has done an incredible job this year. They seem to have managed to secure the key films from nearly every major Festival; I honestly don’t know how they do it!

“I’ve been with the Festival for almost eight years, and this is the most exciting and vibrant CFF programme I can remember. Practically every film seems to be an award winner and is getting rave reviews.

“All we need now is for everyone to come and see as many films as possible. There has never been a better or more critical time to support the Festival and to experience the true magic of cinema.”
