Day 1 • Rocks Official Secrets  Portrait of a Lady on Fire  Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound  The Chambermaid Musicals for Kids with Neil Brand

From the director of Suffragette and Brick Lane comes a story about sisterhood, resilience and the intensity of teenage friendships. Set in East London, the film follows a group of year-11 girls, amongst them Nigerian-British girl Rocks. When Rocks' mother leaves, she and her brother do their utmost to avoid going in to care. As surviving – and keeping their situation secret – becomes increasingly difficult, Rocks has only one group of people she can turn to: her friends.

We are thrilled to be welcoming director Sarah Gavron and writers Theresa Ikoko and Claire Wilson to the screening!

We are delighted to be opening the festival at The Light with Gavin Hood’s Official Secrets, starring Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Matt Smith, Ralph Fiennes, Indira Varma, and Rhys Ifans. In 2003, as politicians in Britain and the US angle to invade Iraq, GCHQ translator Katharine Gun leaks a classified e-mail that urges spying on members of the UN Security Council to force through the resolution to go to war. Charged with breaking the Official Secrets Act, and facing imprisonment, Katharine and her lawyers set out to defend her actions. With her life, liberty and marriage threatened, she must stand up for what she believes in…

We are delighted to welcome journalist Martin Bright – the real-life Observer editor played by Matt Smith in the film – for a Q&A with the audience.

Céline Sciamma tells the story of a female painter who, after being sent to an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman. The painting must be done in secret. Intimacy and attraction grow between the two women but their freedom is short-lived. Sciamma's follow up to the wonderful Girlhood was well worth the wait.
