Hi Friend,
Think of Sorrento, and what comes to mind is usually colourful cliffside houses, the beautiful blue ocean and long stretches of historic coastline. Italy’s famous southwest coastal destination is one of the most popular places in the country amongst visitors, offering an alternative experience to visiting famous cities such as Venice, Florence or Rome.
Sorrento overlooks the Bay of Naples in the region of Campania and is a seaside town known for its impressive architecture and stunning views. It’s also the gateway to the Amalfi Coast and near to the historic city of Pompeii, meaning that plenty of tourists pass through and enjoy the various attractions and highlights that the pretty streets are home to.
The town first rose in popularity as a holiday destination in Roman times, when wealthy families came and built villas overlooking the ocean where they would come and spend their summers. It was also a frequent stopping point for noblemen and women who were completing a ‘Grand Tour’ of Europe in the 19th century and has seen a steady stream of new visitors each year ever since.
Today, Sorrento is a classic Italian town that blends old and new seamlessly together, where ancient architecture rubs shoulders with modern bars and restaurants, and restored villas share views with holiday apartments. Its coastal location means that it’s particularly popular in the summer months, but it’s a beautiful part of Italy to visit at any time of year, with plenty to see and do around the area.
