When you get into private practice you often have a lot more time to work ON your business because the clients aren’t banging down the door (well for you maybe and I hope so, but that was definitely not happening to me).
I remember spending mornings, afternoons and evenings at Starbucks working ON my business.
Working ON your business simply means the stuff, planning, creating, etc you do outside of direct service.
Early on I heard that it is a good idea to have a business plan, so I thought, “I better make a business plan.”
With no business background, knowledge, know-how and not having taken that Business 101 course in grad school (oh you didn’t have that either, lol) I didn’t have a clue.
I searched online for templates, looked for blogs and pieced together what I thought was a “business plan”. Who knows if I ever finished, looked at it again or not. I just thought to do well in business... I needed one.
At first it was like having a hammer and not knowing what to do with it. I had the hammer but now what! Of course lots have changed since then.
