For any clinician, clients who are having suicidal thoughts and/or ideation can be scary, but knowing how to help is important. 

On this week's podcast, we were joined by Norine Vander Hooven, who teaches us how to assess suicide risk in our clients and what to look out for. Click the image above to learn more. 

Here are just some of the talking points she gives in this podcast:
 
1. You are not going to put thoughts of suicide into someone's head by asking if they have thoughts of killing themself.

2. It is critical to ask your client directly if they want to kill themself vs "do you feel like hurting yourself". These are two different things.

3. Clarify what a client is saying when they make an ambiguous sounding statement like "It's just not worth it", "I'm so confused", "Nobody cares anyhow".
