by Michael VanDervort

Ready to get a front-row seat for the latest shake-ups in labor relations?

LRI Consulting Services has just released its Q3 2024 Petitions and Elections Review, packed with the critical insights you need to stay ahead. If you’re navigating the world of labor strategies, union movements, or employer responses, this is your go-to guide for what’s happening across the U.S. workforce.

Here’s the Deal: Key Findings from the Q3 2024 Report

Representation Elections See a 13% Spike

Through Q3 2024, a whopping 1,265 representation (RC) elections were certified, 13% more than this time last year. The kicker? Unions won 79.4% of those elections, organizing 74,457 workers. The real sweet spot for unions? Larger units. Unions absolutely crushed it, winning 90% of RC elections in units with 500+ employees. On the flip side, units with 11 to 25 workers saw the highest volume of elections, racking up 401 certified elections.

Decertification Efforts Cool Off

It’s been a quieter season for decertification efforts. Decertification petitions (RD) are down 13%, and of the 105 elections certified, unions lost 68.6%—which means they had to kiss 2,403 workers goodbye. Small units, especially those with 1 to 10 workers, were the quickest to decertify, with unions losing a whopping 95% of those elections.

Employer-Filed Petitions Explode by 478%

This is where things get wild. Employer-filed petitions (RM) skyrocketed by 478%, with 335 RM petitions submitted. 139 RM elections were certified; surprisingly, unions won only 62.6% of these battles, organizing 4,957 workers.

Regional and State-Level Drama

Region 19 (Pacific Northwest) dominated activity, with 133 RC elections certified. However, regarding union success rates, Region 9 (Ohio and surrounding areas) stole the show, with unions winning 92% of elections.

What This Means for You

“This sharp rise in employer-filed petitions, along with the continued strength of unions in larger units, signals a seismic shift in labor relations,” said Phil Wilson, President of LRI Consulting Services. “Our Q3 2024 report is packed with actionable data to help businesses and labor strategists stay ahead of union trends and adjust their approaches accordingly.”
