One seemingly controversial question in personal finance is "Should I pay off my mortgage early or invest"?

Many financial planners will tell you that it's WAY smarter to take the money you could use to pay off your mortgage, and invest in places where you can earn a higher return.

This makes a lot of sense on paper, but in my experience can sometimes play out a little differently in real life.
