RESEARCH PRACTICES

Cultural organizations are striving to become more data-informed – and that’s great news! If we want to expand and diversify attendance to be more representative of the US population, then we need data to understand not only our current audiences, but also those inactive visitors who are choosing not to visit us. Becoming data-informed means much more than simply “having” data, though. This article addresses select shortsighted practices that risk our sector’s competitive abilities and long-term growth potential, and it inspires critical thinking. Not everything that can be measured is worth measuring or is necessarily helpful. It’s important to understand the difference between a key performance indicator and a diagnostic metric.

NATIONAL ARTS & HUMANITIES MONTH

October is National Arts & Humanities Month (NAHM) and there are a number of new initiatives, tools, and resources for 2022:

Save the Date: Americans for the Arts’ October Member Briefing will take place Tuesday, October 11, at 3:00 p.m. ET with a focus on National Arts & Humanities Month. The free virtual briefing will feature an interview with this year's NAHM ambassador and a glimpse into what members are doing to honor the arts and humanities in their communities this fall.

TO PRICE BUNDLE OR UNBUNDLE?

If bundling is on the table for your organization, then this research and related pricing psychology suggest that it may be worthy of your consideration. Research generally suggests that admission cost is not a primary barrier to visiting museums and performing arts entities, even in today’s price-sensitive economy. (Spoiler alert: Being free or low-priced does not correlate with perceptions of being welcoming for cultural entities. Being perceived as welcoming is so much more than admission cost.) Research currently shows that many entities are potentially underpriced within their respective markets.
