WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Art in Common, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) community outreach organization based in Ridgefield, CT founded and led by Aimee Jette, CLAT, ATR, LPC, a practicing art therapist, and artist. The mission is to promote creativity, increase community awareness around important social issues, and foster connection across populations. Offerings include presentations, workshops, and classes related to the connection between art practice and mental health, and art exhibitions in support of participants. LEARN MORE

James Stevenson Lost and Found Lab hosts single-person residencies, providing a retreat-like live/work setting for visual artists, writers, scholars, curators and creatives exploring the relationship between language and art. The Lab is named in honor of New Yorker cartoonist and New York Times columnist, James Stevenson and celebrates Stevenson’s working methodology as both a writer and visual artist. Lost and Found Lab provides peaceful and supportive living arrangements for artists and scholars seeking light, space, and silence - and unrestricted time to one's craft. LEARN MORE

Fairfield Public Library revealed the One Book One Town title selection for 2022 on January 6th in front of the SHU Community Theatre. The House in the Cerulean Sea is the multiple award-winning fantasy novel by TJ Klune, published in December of 2020 by Tor Books.  The committee was captivated by this book because of its themes of love, acceptance and kindness, calling it “an enchanting read” and pure happiness.” Copies of the book will be for sale at the Fairfield University Bookstore or available to borrow at both locations of the library. KEYS (Kids Empowered by Your Support) received a $43,500 CT Cultural Fund Operating Support Grant from CT Humanities, the statewide, nonprofit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). This award will launch 2022 with funds needed to further KEYS’ vision of a world where every child has access to the transformative experience of studying and playing music regardless of circumstances. LEARN MORE

KEYS (Kids Empowered by Your Support), which provides free, in-school, and virtual music instrument instruction to Bridgeport, CT students, welcomes Ridgefield resident David Sachs to the KEYS Board of Directors. David Sachs has been a professor and served as Associate Dean at Pace University’s Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems since 1984. LEARN MORE

The Klein Memorial Auditorium was granted approval for $300,000 by the Connecticut State Bonding Commission to complete funding for a building project scheduled to be constructed in 2022. The project includes the installation of an elevator to transport patrons to the mezzanine level, a restroom on the ground floor with wheelchair accessibility, a conference room, and three small offices. LEARN MORE

The Norwalk Art Space @ ADK House was featured in an article by The Hour for their free classes which are growing a new generation of creatives. Each year, five established artists are named Korry Fellows. These fellows exhibit their work in exchange for mentoring younger resident artists. The resident artists then teach free art classes to high school students. LEARN MORE

DR. MARIA ROSARIO JACKSON CONFIRMED AS CHAIR OF THE NEA

The U.S. Senate voted to confirm Dr. Maria Rosario Jackson as the 13th chair of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Dr. Jackson stated that she looks forward to working with Congress, state and local arts leaders, and fellow members of the National Council on the Arts as well as arts communities and people in intersecting fields such as community development and public health. She plans to ensure access to the resources and experiences all Americans need to live healthy, robust, meaningful, and creative lives.

CT HUMANITIES AWARDS $16M TO 624 CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS


At their recent meeting, the board of directors of CT Humanities (CTH) awarded 624 non-profit museums and cultural, humanities, and arts organizations a total of $16M in CT Cultural Fund Operating Support Grants (CTCFOSG). The CTCFOSG are part of $30.7M of support allocated to CTH over the next two years by the CT General Assembly and approved by Governor Ned Lamont. This funding underscores the commitment Connecticut’s leaders have made to address the health and wellbeing of the people and communities they serve.

IMPROVING COMMUNITY HEALTH & RESILIENCE THROUGH THE ARTS


The National League of Cities (NLC) Institute for Youth, Education, and Families (YEF Institute) has announced a new initiative called Improving Community Health and Resilience through the Arts. It will leverage the power of the arts to support city leaders’ efforts to improve the health, cohesion, and resilience of their communities.   Cities, towns, and villages, are invited to participate in spurring creative artworks in their respective communities to improve community conditions and improve community wellbeing.
