Blueprint to PSLE English
Blueprint is an e-book for students who wish to improve on their composition writing skills. It addresses strategies and techniques which aid students in producing excellent narrative and expository essays. Purchasing Blueprint also gives one access to videos and pdfs that will accelerate learning. As a bonus, our experienced teachers will mark two pieces of your child's work. You will also receive a supplementary e-book which offers tips on tackling other sections of the English exam.
For more information about this e-book, call us at 6455 3063 or visit this webpage.
Characterisation
A good story needs interesting and realistic characters.

To make your characters realistic, it helps to write what you know. So if you are a student in Singapore, try writing from the perspective of someone like you. Even if the character is not like you in any physical way, try and find some way to relate to this fictional person mentally. Think about any relevant experiences you may have had.

Before you start writing, you need to have a mental image of who your characters are as people. Although students writing in an exam will have a limited amount of time to develop their characters, there are some basic questions they can consider.
  • What type of personality does your character have?
  • What motivates your character? What does your character want?
  • By the end, does your character change or stay the same?
To flesh out your characters in an interesting way, remember to show not tell. When you use the "show not tell" technique, you can create more nuanced characters. If your characters are layered instead of one-dimensional, they will be more interesting and realistic.

Do you remember this scene from the first Harry Potter movie? What does it tell us about Neville Longbottom?
  • Neville seems brave as he was able to stand up to his friends.
  • However, his voice trembled as he did this. This suggests that confronting them made him fearful or nervous.
Reading
A recent article published in the Straits Times has raised concerns about how little young people in Singapore are reading. Between 2012 and 2016, borrowing at our national libraries reduced by 15%. Although more people are reading e-books, this increase has not been sufficient to offset the fall in regular borrowing.

Whilst book borrowing is in decline, time spent on electronic devices is on the rise. A study published in 2017 found that by the time Singaporean children hit the age of 12, they are likely to spend more than 6 hours a day playing games, watching videos, or listening to music on a smartphone, tablet, or some other portable device. Educators worry that this will leave students unable to concentrate in class.

Another concern is that young people in Singapore are not reading enough news. This could have an effect on their job prospects. Moreover, research has found that students who read newspapers are more likely to be engaged in affairs concerning their local communities, their state, and the wider global landscape.

Keen to pick up a new book over the June holidays? Here are some suggestions.

1. Describe the plot of your favourite novel. What lessons have you learnt from it?
2. How could we encourage young people to do more reading?
3. Have e-readers like Kindle made printed books obsolete?
