Are you ready for Lunar New Year? These dogs are.
Keeping a dog as a pet takes up resources like money, time and space, unlike low maintenance pets like a hamster, terrapin or fish. Keeping a dog can be seen by some as a sign of wealth. How can one provide for a dog if one doesn't have enough?

Singapore is a nation of animal lovers. Despite the fact that dogs are still not allowed in most establishments and public transport, many dog friendly cafes and businesses catering to dog owners are increasing in numbers.

Last month, The Straits Times ran an article about pet owners spending more money on their dogs as the Chinese New Year approaches. Such expenditure are spent on grooming, buying accessories, fur dyeing and even spa treatments.

The SPCA has released a report imploring us to be more responsible when adopting and grooming dogs.

Questions to Ponder

1. Do you think pets should be pampered like humans and why?

2. If you had a pet, what would you do to show your affection to it?

3. What can you do to show your care and concern for the less privileged among us?

Critical Thinking

The Curious Case of the Missing Dog and Pig
Netizens are already familiar with the fiasco made by Giant Supermarket Chain in Malaysia a few weeks ago.

The Malaysian Chinese had mixed reactions when Giant sold a Chinese New Year themed T-shirt with all the animals in the Chinese Zodiac printed on it, except for the dog and the pig. According to Islam, these two animals are considered as unclean.

Has Giant gone overboard with cultural sensitivity that it becomes unnecessarily biased? Why not sell a shirt with none of the twelve animals in the design? The omission would have been far less conspicuous.

Questions to Ponder

1. What is your response to the removal of the two Chinese zodiac signs?

2. Where do we draw the line between respecting one's culture and being biased?

3. If you were the clothes manufacturer in Malaysia, what would you have done?
