11 Tips For Public Speaking
As part of our post exam curriculum, we have included several components that hone our students' oratory skills. These include debates, verbal responses and public speaking skills.

Glossophobia or speech anxiety is the fear of public speaking. 75% of all people experience some degree of anxiety when public speaking. Surveys have shown most people fear public speaking more than they fear death. To help people overcome their stage fright, a TED speaker coach shares 11 Tips for right before one goes on stage. In a nutshell:-

1. Starting drinking water 15 minutes before you start talking.

2. Psych yourself up, not out.

3. Use your body’s nervous energy for good.

5. Beware of repetitive motion.

6. Think about how to use movement wisely.

7. Use your tone to strengthen your words.

8. Give people a chance to adjust to your accent.

9. Focus on something outside of yourself.

10. Remember that the audience likes you.

11. And finally, no matter how well you prepare — be okay with the unexpected.

Freeganism in Singapore
Freeganism is a practice and ideology of limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources, particularly through recovering wasted goods like food. The word "freegan" is a portmanteau of the words "free" and "vegan".

Recently, Channel New Asia (CNA) published a story about 38-year-old Mr Daniel Tay, a self-proclaimed freegan who goes through the trash of others to find items he can eat or use, as a way of life. Reactions from readers ranged from admiration to sheer disgust. Click on the video below to watch Daniel in action.
One might assume participants of the freeganism movement do so for economical reasons. However, some participants do it to make a statement against excessive consumerism and unnecessary food wastage. Others do it for fun.

This festive season, adopt the freegan's love for sharing. Go through the items you are about to throw away and consider donating those that are still usable to a charity organisation. Every bit counts.
1. What does Daniel mean when he says he hopes that in future, "dumpster diving is either normal or obsolete"?

2. Would you become a dumpster diver in Singapore? Why?

3. What can you do as a Singaporean to reduce food wastage?

Best Christmas Advertisements of 2017
Rainy weather. Christmas Songs. Christmas decorations at Orchard Road. Year End Sale. These are signs that the festive season is upon us. It is also the time netizens await with bated breath to watch the various Christmas advertisements on YouTube.

It all started in 2011 when UK Departmental store John Lewis revolutionised the game with their moving advertisement, "The Long Wait". Since then, other players like Sainsbury, Aldi, Marks & Spencer and Tesco had joined in the fray, producing Christmas advertisements that give one the warm fuzzy feeling, and occasional emotional wallop.

Click on the links below for more such commercials and feel the Christmas spirit!

1. What three characteristics do you look out for in an excellent commercial?

2. Which commercial do you think deserves the "Most Moving Mini Movie"? Explain your reasons carefully.

3. "It is better to give than to receive." How true is this statement in our society?
