Dear Parents,

New P6 and Essay Writing Classes in 2016

Creative Campus is excited to announce the launch of our Primary 6 Essay Writing and Oral Skills (EWO) classes in 2016, along with new P6 classes.

(I) EWO Classes

Aimed at students who are targeting distinctions in their English paper, the course will run for three cycles of 10 weeks each. The first cycle starts on the week of 11 January 2016.

The classes are separate from the regular classes, so students can opt for both the regular class and the EWO class for each term.

Classes will alternate between Essay Writing workshops and skills Oral Response so that students can maximise their learning with adequate breaks in between. The key skills covered for the EWO include:

• Content and plot derivation for the new PSLE composition requirements
• Tools and techniques to boost descriptive writing and cogency
• Derivation of points of discussion for the oral component
• Verbal practice on how to articulate responses confidently and    coherently
• Thorough feedback mechanisms for both essay writing and orals so  students can identify their strengths and work on their weaknesses

Currently, two slots are available:
(II) New P6 Regular Classes

In addition to our existing time slots, Primary 6 students who are interested in our regular classes can also enroll in the following new time slots:
Alternative timeslots are available, subject to a minimum number of students and teacher’s availability. Please email chalk@creativecampus.com.sg or call us at 6455 3063 to find out more.

Writing Tips

The examinations are here again! Remember to take a breather, stay calm and apply the skills that have been taught to you.

For the essay writing section, remember to

1. Plan for the essay

PSLE students – if you are writing a narrative composition, remember to plan the climax first, followed by the resolution. It is vital that you know the main plot and how the story ends even before you begin writing.

‘O’ levels – for your chosen topic, analyse the question carefully and take note of key phrases or qualifiers e.g. “describe”, “discuss”, “agree/disagree”. Outline your essay with a clear thesis statement.

2. Write clearly and with impact

PSLE students – this means that you have to embellish your sentences with emotive descriptors. When describing scenery, engage your five senses and think about how to bring the scenery to life with appropriate phrases and description. While descriptive phrases are useful, avoid cramming too many adjectives or adverbs to describe a particular detail.

‘O’ levels – When in doubt, use clarity as your yardstick for writing. Make sure your essay follows a logical structure and use short sentences. Avoid overly-elaborate sentences or cramming too many ideas into one sentence.

3. Check for mistakes

Whether it’s a PSLE narrative or an ‘O’ levels essay, make sure you have time at the end to proofread your script for grammar, spelling and punctuation errors. These mistakes can accumulate and cost you unnecessary marks.

All the best for your examinations!

Discussion Article

Last month, Mark Zuckerberg announced that the ‘Dislike’ button may finally be coming to Facebook! While the details are not finalised, critics have already raised concerns. Some points for discussion:

4. Why do you think a “dislike” button might be necessary on social media?

5. What are the limitations or possible harms of having a button to express negativity on social media?

6. What are some other buttons that you would like to see available on social media?
