The distinction between the indefinite articles, ‘a’ and ‘an’, may seem easy, but students sometimes confuse the two in their writing.
We have all learnt the simple rule the ‘a’ is used for words that begin with a consonant, and ‘an’ is reserved for words that begins with a vowel.
However, there are a few notable exceptions, for example:
· A university
· A one-day event
· An FBI agent
Rather than think of them as exceptions, it is better to refine our rule thus: whether to use ‘a’ or ‘an’ depends on the sound at the start of the following word.
If it is a consonant but sounds like a vowel (e.g. ‘hour’, ‘FBI’), then use ‘an’.
Likewise, if it is a vowel but sounds like a consonant (e.g. ‘university’, ‘one’), then use the indefinite article, ‘a’.
