Discussion Article

We often hear of news articles condemning illegal poachers. This month, we explore the demand side of the illegal wildlife trade. In the Guardian article, a high-end Laos resort serves as a haven for affluent Chinese tourists.

Some questions to consider:
• What are the factors that may contribute to lax regulations and weak enforcements in such places?

• Is it more effective to punish the supply side, i.e. wildlife poachers in conservation areas or the demand side, i.e. the consumers of wildlife products?

• Given that status is one of the drivers for demand, what can be done to reduce the perception that consuming wildlife elevates one’s status or that ownership of exotic wildlife products is a status symbol?

Study Tips

Students sometimes get confused between when to use “who” and when to use “whom”.
“Who” is usually used to refer to the subject of the sentence, e.g.

Mr. Tan, who is my neighbour, goes for a run every morning.

“Whom” is usually used to refer to the object of the sentence, e.g.
The police arrested the man whom we saw at the mall yesterday.

When in doubt, just turn the sentence into a question and ask yourself which pronoun, “he” or “him”, you would use.

Who goes for a run every morning? Mr. Tan/he, thus we use "who".
Who was arrested by the police? The man/him, thus we use “whom”.
