Onerous Onomatopoeia
When writing narrative essays, fewer people remember to use sound to describe the scene in order to make it come alive.

One great way to do this is with onomatopoeia - which refers to words that sound like the action or effect they describe.

Place the following onomatopoeic words in the most appropriate sentences!

1. The wind blew strongly, causing the leaves to _______ and fall from the trees.

2. Walking next to the stream brought her great comfort as she loved the calm _______ of the water.

3. The ferocious dog _______ when it saw the burglar climbing over the fence.

4. Jane jumped when she heard the loud _______ of cans being toppled over.

5. Taylor shrieked when an bullet suddenly _______ past her head.

6. The shrill _______ of mosquitoes never fails to annoy me.

7. The fact that the door was locked did not deter James from _______ his way into the room.

8. "Wow! This soup is so delicious!" John declared as he _______ the last drops up.

9. The loud _______ of the air-conditioning started to become rather distracting.

10. Grandpa _______ heartily when he heard the dog _______ loudly in its sleep.

Model Answers:
1. rustle, 2. bubbling, 3. snarled, 4. clatter, 5. whizzed, 6. whine, 7. bashing, 8. slurped, 9. hum, 10. chuckled, snorting

Flying to the Sun
Technology has advanced immensely from the time humans first set foot on the moon in 1969. Scientists have recently sent a solar probe to the sun, in order to collect scientific data to better understand how the sun works.

Despite taking off in early August, the probe will only reach the sun in early November, coming within 6.16 million kilometres from the toasty surface.

In order to withstand the incredible temperature of 1370 degrees Celcius, scientists built a shield out of special carbon-composite material, which aims to keep the equipment at a cool 29 degrees Celcius.

One of the aims of the scientists is to understand why temperatures rise greatly further away from the core of the sun. Mission scientist Adam Szabo says, "You would expect that things should cool off...This is one of these big unknowns: What's going on there?"

Scientists also hope to uncover greater information on how to leave the pull of the Earth's magnetic fields behind and explore space uninhibited. Click here to read more.

Questions to Consider

1. Would you want to go to space? Why?

2. Should governments invest state funds in space exploration?
