Here's a short passage for you to decipher. Read it carefully, and then answer the questions that follow. Aim to get all of them correct!
Opera is a dramatic art form. Originating in Europe, the emotional content of a scene or plot is conveyed to the audience through the rousing music, both vocal and instrumental, as well as through the lyrics. In contrast, an actor's dramatic performance in a musical theatre is primary, while the music plays a lesser role.
The drama in opera is presented using the primary elements of theatre such as scenery, costumes, and acting. However, the words of the opera, or libretto, are sung rather than spoken. The singers are accompanied by a musical ensemble ranging from a small instrumental ensemble to a full symphonic orchestra.
1. It is pointed out in the reading that opera _____. A) has developed under the influence of musical theatre B) is a drama sung with the accompaniment of an orchestra C) is not a high-budget production D) is often performed in Europe E) is the most complex of all the performing arts 2. We understand that ____. A) people are captivated more by opera than musical theatre B) drama in opera is more important than the music C) orchestras in operas can vary considerably in size D) musical theatre relies above all on music E) there is argument over whether the music is more important than the words in opera 3. It is stated that _____. A) acting and costumes are secondary to music in musical theatre B) many people find musical theatre more captivating than opera C) music in musical theatre is not as important as it is in opera D) an opera requires a huge orchestra as well as a large choir E) an opera does not have anything in common with musical theatre Answers: 1. What's Your Worst Nightmare?
Here's a trivia for you: did you know that birds and animals can have dreams and nightmares? Interestingly, only reptiles do not dream.
Having unpleasant and disturbing dreams is a common phenomenon. In ancient times, it was believed that disturbing dreams are caused by evil spirits that haunt people while they sleep, and suffocate them to death. However, modern research has shown that nightmares may be caused by one's fear, insecurity, stress, trauma, and even problems related to relationships or work. Nightmares can also be an effect of taking certain drugs. Moreover, nightmares seem prevalent in children between 3 to 13 years old, after which girls seem to experience more nightmares than boys. Generally, nightmares occur in that stage of sleep known as Rapid Eye Movement (REM), when all things that one has experienced resurface in the subconscious mind.
Researchers believe one has more than 100,000 dreams during one's lifetime, with at least some of them being nightmares. Thankfully, although nightmares are normal, they do not normally recur. Read more here. |

Questions to Consider 1. If distressing daytime situations have the tendency to cause nightmares, will you change your lifestyle just to reduce nightmares?
2. Why do you think cold-blooded creatures like reptiles are unable to dream?
3. There are some who claim they can control dreams, overcome nightmares during sleep, or even interpret one's dreams. What are your thoughts? |
