Tips for Narrative Writers
9 of 10

Continuing from our previous tip, we'll be talking about leaving an impression in your essay.

Ensure that each paragraph has a purpose. This helps you avoid going off-topic, or rambling on about unimportant events. A good piece of writing should be sharp, yet have enough detail to ensure the writing is not too flat.

One way to amp up the quality of writing would be to switch the order of the timeline. Try starting with the climax or ending for a more exciting piece! For example, opening with the climax would read something like this:

Panting heavily, I cleared yet another lap of my 2.4 kilometre run. The sun was blinding and the scorching heat seemed to sear into my skin. The corners of my eyes were slowing turning black, but I refused to slow down. I could not afford to, not if I wanted to get a distinction in my first physical fitness test. My calves burned with exhaustion as I turned the corner when, all of a sudden, a weird sensation overwhelmed me. I felt weightless. It was almost as if I watching myself in a movie. I saw my body slowly crash to the ground before I lost consciousness...

Earlier that day, I had been revising for the examinations ...

Remember to follow the recount with a past perfect tense as above. This sets the timeframe accurately.

Our final tip on structure will follow in our upcoming newsletter next month! Stay tuned.
Halloween is celebrated around the world on the 31st October, where people dress up and go trick-or-treating. The festival originated as a Celtic harvest festival which eventually was taken over by the Church. It has then evolved since to become a fun festival with little significance to the modern day Church. The purpose of the celebration was to honour the saints and pray for the recently-departed souls who have yet to reach Heaven.

A possible reason for why people dress up in costumes during Halloween was given by Christian minister Prince Sorie Conteh, who wrote, "It was traditionally believed that the souls of the departed wandered the earth until All Saints' Day, and All Hallows' Eve provided one last chance for the dead to gain vengeance on their enemies before moving to the next world. In order to avoid being recognised by any soul that might be seeking such vengeance, people would don masks or costumes to disguise their identities." In medieval Europe, bonfires were lit along the roads to guide these souls on their way and deflect them from haunting honest folk.

Read more about it here.
1. Have you celebrated Halloween before? Would you want to?
2. Why do you think people enjoy celebrating certain festivities?
3. If you could create a festival, what would it be and why?
