Tips for Narrative Writers 9 of 10
Continuing from our previous tip, we'll be talking about leaving an impression in your essay.
Ensure that each paragraph has a purpose. This helps you avoid going off-topic, or rambling on about unimportant events. A good piece of writing should be sharp, yet have enough detail to ensure the writing is not too flat.
One way to amp up the quality of writing would be to switch the order of the timeline. Try starting with the climax or ending for a more exciting piece! For example, opening with the climax would read something like this:
Panting heavily, I cleared yet another lap of my 2.4 kilometre run. The sun was blinding and the scorching heat seemed to sear into my skin. The corners of my eyes were slowing turning black, but I refused to slow down. I could not afford to, not if I wanted to get a distinction in my first physical fitness test. My calves burned with exhaustion as I turned the corner when, all of a sudden, a weird sensation overwhelmed me. I felt weightless. It was almost as if I watching myself in a movie. I saw my body slowly crash to the ground before I lost consciousness...
Earlier that day, I had been revising for the examinations ...
Remember to follow the recount with a past perfect tense as above. This sets the timeframe accurately.
