English Enrichment
Homonyms, Homophones, Homographs and Heteronyms -- What’s the difference?

Homonyms are examples of how the English language can be so confusing yet wonderfully humorous. Coming from the Greek word “homonymous”, the term refers to words that have the same spelling and pronunciation, but have different meanings. Homonyms can come in the following different forms:

Homophones: Same pronunciation with different meanings, spelling may or may not be the same, for example:
  • Write and Right
  • Address -- to speak to/location
  • Bright -- intelligent/filled with light
Homographs: Same spelling, pronunciation may or may not be the same, for example:
  • Present -- a gift/to introduce
  • Mean -- average/to be rude
  • Bass -- an instrument/type of fish
Heteronyms: Same spelling, different pronunciation, for example:
  • Desert -- to abandon, an arid region
  • Lead -- to guide, a metallic element
Homonyms are often used in scripts of plays or shows as the punchline to a joke as the audience is able to hear the pun and the different intended meaning of the homophonic words. An example of homophones used in literature can ben seen in William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and Romeo and Juliet.

Let's try! Can you spot the homonyms?

(1) A scene from Much Ado About Nothing
DON PEDRO: Why, how now, Count, wherefore are you sad?
CLAUDIO: Not sad, my lord.
DON PEDRO: How then, sick?
CLAUDIO: Neither, my lord.
BEATRICE: The Count is neither sad, nor sick, nor merry, nor well, but civil count, civil as an orange, and something of that jealous complexion.

(2) A scene from Romeo and Juliet:
SAMPSON: Gregory, o’ my word, we’ll not carry coals.
GREGORY: No, for then we should be colliers.
SAMPSON: I mean, an we be in choler, we’ll draw.
GREGORY: Ay, while you live, draw your neck out o’ the collar.

Answers:
(1) A scene from Much Ado About Nothing
In this play, civil has the same pronunciation as the Spanish city of Seville, where oranges are known to be bitter. Thus, Beatrice is implying that the count is feeling bitter.

(2) A scene from Romeo and Juliet
Sampson and Gregory use the three homophones collier, choler and collar
As seen in this example, the use of homophones does not necessarily need to make sense in such dialogue since it is used to convey humour.
