Foreshadowing
The gathering of storm clouds, an ominous painting, or an unusual turn of phrase...Foreshadowing can take almost any form, and it helps add a little touch of magic to a once unremarkable plot.

Foreshadowing is a technique for setting the scene, in which writers give their readers subtle clues as to what will follow.

A clue could be an object, a location, or something the protagonist detects with his five senses. Alternatively, the writer could opt for something more abstract, a theme or motif constructed through sound, colour, diction or otherwise.

Sometimes a suspicious but unremarkable factual oddity can be a reader's first clue to a major plot point.

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, we learn that Ron's pet rat, Scabbers, has lived for four times the average lifespan of a garden rat, despite never exhibiting any magical powers. It is an interesting fact, but not an important one, until we learn that Scabbers is in fact Peter Pettigrew, the former Marauder who betrayed James and Lily Potter.

For an example of foreshadowing in film, watch the following video of clips from Pixar's Toy Story (1995).
Bugs: A Sustainable Food Source
Angelina Jolie loves noshing on the creepy crawlies. On her recent trip to Cambodia, she shared some of her favourite ways to prepare scorpion and tarantula. The video has understandably elicited mixed responses.

Instead of dwelling on the "icky" factor, consider the benefits of including insects in our diets. First and foremost, bugs are nutritious. They are a good source of protein, minerals and amino acids.

Secondly, bugs are a more sustainable food source than other meat products. As the estimated population of the world is expected to hit 9 billion in 2050, there is an urgent need to address the possibility of a food shortage.

Bugs fit the bill as it takes 75% less feed to produce 1kg of insects than to produce an equal amount of cattle.

One member of the edible bugs industry believes that bugs will eventually be as well-liked as sushi!
