Writing Tip: Fun with Puns

Puns are exciting. Puns are great. Puns are punny.
Essentially, puns are words or phrases that either have a double meaning or are homophones. Often, puns can take on both literal and figurative associations of a word. For instance:

I was wondering where the tennis ball went. Then it hit me.

The pun lies in the word ‘hit’. This is because the word 'hit' can mean that the tennis ball flew and struck the narrator physically; or that the narrator realised where the tennis ball was.

Puns are a fun way to inject humour in your writing. When done well, it can add significant marks to the overall impression of your essay.
Can you identify and explain the following the puns?
  • I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. It's impossible to put down.
  • I'm on a macadamia diet and it’s driving me nuts.
  • A book just fell on my head. I've only got my shelf to blame.
  • Pawnshop owners prefer customers without any redeeming qualities.
  • Becoming a vegetarian is a big missed steak.
  • The lawyer had to represent the thief who stole the underwear. It was a brief case.
  • When I was young I wanted to be a banker. Then I lost interest.
Here are some punny riddles, just for laughs:
  • What do you call an owl who does magic tricks? Houdini
  • What subject do snakes love? History
  • What do you call a bear with no teeth? Gummy bear
  • How do you organise a space party? You planet.
  • Why did the banana go to the doctor? It wasn’t peeling well.
Try some on your own!
Recently, our students discussed the issue of gun violence in the United States. The ambiguous phrasing of the Second Amendment of the U.S Constitution has, and will understandably continue to be, a point of contention for both Republicans and Democrats alike.

Read the article here.

Regardless, vigilance always plays an important role in the early detection of potential dangers. Commissioned by Sandy Hook Promise, the commercial is both ingenious and powerful. You would probably hit that 'play' button again.

  1. Do you think gun control should be more stringent in America?
  2. Compared with the United States, Singapore has zero tolerance for gun ownership. Do you think that Singapore should be more lenient on gun control laws?
  3. How else can Singaporeans protect their families in the face of danger?
