Hook Sentences
Start your essays with a hook! Hook sentences can be used in either narrative or expository essays to grab the attention of readers and entice them to read on.

1984, George Orwell
Orwell's classic dystopian novel begins with the following line:
"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen."
In the world of the novel, these are unremarkable, everyday observations.
However, through the mention of clocks striking 13, readers find themselves alerted to the strangeness of this fictional world.

When writing narrative essays, consider starting your story with an action, emotion, or thought. This immediately gives readers a glimpse into the action, piquing their interest.  Charlotte's Web achieves this with a rather ominous opening line: "Where’s Papa going with that ax?” said Fern to her mom as they were setting the table for breakfast.

In an expository essay, a hook sentence, sometimes referred to as an arresting start, can take many forms. Quotes are sometimes used to anchor or crystallise the issue. The source of a quote can also affect your message.

For instance, quoting Nelson Mandela on matters such as courage, inequality, or change, can inject a certain degree of gravitas into your piece. Statistics can have a similar effect. Tangible evidence can lend credibility to your ideas.  Alternatively, use anecdotes to illustrate points in ways that make the issue approachable or relatable.

A basic way to begin your essay is to define key terms and your stance. This is important for clarity, but it can make for a rather dull introduction. You could circumvent this problem by incorporating your definitions into more impactful statements. One option is to assertively state the most controversial part of your opinion, which might inspire spirited agreement or vehement objection. Either way, the reader is more likely to continue reading.

Alternatively, ask rhetorical questions instead of making blatant statements of opinion. A rhetorical question is a question to which no one expects an answer. It can be a relatively subtle way to nudge the reader towards your stance before you even begin delving into the nitty-gritty of arguments.

The Merchant of Venice, Shakespeare
In the play, Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, is subjected to a sham trial. He responds to this anti-Semitic persecution with a series of rhetorical questions:
"Hath not a Jew eyes? ... If you prick us, do we not bleed?"
Here, rhetorical questions are used to elicit a strong emotional response. In the words of German actor Alexander Granach, "Shylock's defense becomes an accusation".

Singlish On Buses
Tower Transit has introduced new double-decker buses with signs written in a combination of Singlish and Standard English. The company intends to display these signs for a trial period of 6 months. Some consider it a "fun" or "creative" approach to getting important information through to Singaporeans. Others have raised concerns that encouraging the use of Singlish will result in a decline in our ability to speak Standard English. The Straits Times' online poll, which elicited over 5000 responses, has approximately 78% of respondents expressing that they are comfortable with the use of Singlish signs on buses.
