Tips for Narrative Writers

Employing structure in your essay is an easy yet effective way in ensuring you do not go out of point while engaging the reader.

Firstly, always begin with a hook. An exciting or interesting start can pique the reader's curiosity and make him eager to find out more. Rather than beginning with a standard description of the weather, try bursting in with dialogue or sounds to stand out.

For example, a standard opening would begin like this:
"It was a warm and sunny day. Fluffy magnolia white clouds floated gently in the azure blue sky. I woke up in bed and suddenly remembered the performance later that day. I felt queasy and my fingers turned cold."

Instead, how about something like this:
The shrill screaming of the alarm jolted me out of my dreams. I must remember to lower the volume settings on the phone, I mused  sleepily when suddenly, the impending performance later that afternoon came to mind. A heavy sense of dread grabbed my stomach in a vice grip and, for a split second, my fingers turned cold and clammy."

The next tip on structure will follow in our upcoming newsletter next month! Stay tuned.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is around the corner! This year, Chinatown will be illuminated in an array of LED lanterns.  Many are aware of the "Mooncake Festival" but not everyone knows of the various fables behind the origin of the celebrations. It is with this objective in mind that organisers aim to bring the story of Hou Yi and Chang Er to the younger generation,

Hou Yi was a legendary archer in ancient times, who helped to shoot down 9 out of 10 of the suns in the sky, preventing the people from getting scorched to death. He was rewarded with an elixir of immortality which he asked his wife Chang Er to keep. An evil man tried to steal the elixir from her one day, and knowing she could not defeat him, she drank it to make sure he would not get his hands on it. She flew into the sky, higher and higher, until she reached the moon. Hou Yi was miserable as he could no longer be with her, and prepared a table full of food for her, in hopes that she would return. Since then, the tradition of mooncake eating began, celebrated yearly on the day when the moon would be brightest.
1. What is most important to you during the Mooncake Festival?
2. Is it essential to celebrate cultural events? Why or why not?
3. How much do traditional values mean to you?
4. What are some of the ways in which we can attempt to preserve our heritage?
