Tips for Narrative Writers

Lengthy rambling sentences not only confuse your reader, but also do not get your point across. Instead of combining multiple ideas into one long sentence, try breaking up each sentence into more concise points.

Take this monstrously long sentence from famous author Vladimir Nabokov, from his book The Gift for example:

“As he crossed toward the pharmacy at the corner he involuntarily turned his head because of a burst of light that had ricocheted from his temple, and saw, with that quick smile with which we greet a rainbow or a rose, a blindingly white parallelogram of sky being unloaded from the van—a dresser with mirrors across which, as across a cinema screen, passed a flawlessly clear reflection of boughs sliding and swaying not arboreally, but with a human vacillation, produced by the nature of those who were carrying this sky, these boughs, this gliding façade.”

What a mouthful! While he can get away with it, being a prolific and skilled writer, your teacher would appreciate shorter, simpler sentences that clearly state your point.

Try breaking down his sentence into smaller and more concise sentences. Find our suggested breakdown of the paragraph in the 'Questions to Consider' section below.

The examination period can be a very stressful season, especially as the end of the year approaches with all-important tests. This article includes some useful tips that may help you in your preparations. Here's a sample:

"Unfortunately, when you find an ideal place to study, sometimes people bring things they don’t need. For instance, while it may seem ideal to type notes into a computer to refer back to later, computers are a powerful distraction for many people because they can do so many different things. Playing games, going online, IM’ing, surfing the Web, and answering emails are all wonderful distractions that have nothing to do with studying. So ask yourself whether you really need a computer to take notes, or whether you can make do with the old-fashioned paper and pen or pencil."

Sounds like great advice! For more tips, check out this website.

(Answer to the earlier 'Writing Tips' section:)

“As he crossed toward the pharmacy at the corner, a burst of light ricocheted from his temple. Involuntarily, he turned and saw a blindingly white parallelogram of sky being unloaded from the van. He gave a quick smile, one with which we greet a rainbow or a rose.
It was a dresser with mirrors across. Like a cinema screen, it passed a flawlessly clear reflection of boughs. The reflection of sky and the boughs and was sliding and swaying to the motion of those carrying this gliding façade.”
