Critical Thinking
From a nutritional point of view, the potato is classified as a vegetable but botanically, it is classified as a fruit. So, what is your take on this?

Is the Potato a Vegetable?
The potato is a perennial herbaceous plant with the underground stem called tuber. Tubers are used in nutrition and they do not contain seed. Hence, this is the reason the potato is identified as a vegetable. Potatoes that we eat are a part of the root of the potato plant.

Is the Potato a Fruit?
The potato is classified as a fruit because of the fruits that are developed on the potato plant. It is part of the nightshade family that includes tomatoes, pepper and eggplants. As such, they are technically considered as fruits since they are developed from the ovary at the base of the flower. Moreover, the potato produces green fruits from its flowers which contain a poisonous alkaloid called Solanine. Did you know that the potato fruit contains seeds?
