Tips for Narrative Writers
5 of 10

Passive sentences are sometimes used by students in their essays in an attempt to vary their sentence structure. However, this can often lead to rather confusing sentences where it is unclear what is actually happening in the statement. Therefore, especially for younger writers, students should strive to simplify their statements by using active and direct constructions.

Avoid: The bag was stolen by the robber who was chased by the lady.

Instead, consider: The lady chased the robber who stole her bag.

This way, there is less ambiguity about the actions being done and to whom the actions were done to.

Try changing these sentences to active ones: (the answers can be found in the 'Questions to Consider' section)

1. The ice-cream was eaten by the monster
2. Many games were played by the girls, and many prizes were won by them.

Jake Marcionette is a New York Times best-selling author. What's special about him? He was 12 when his book,  Just Jake, made its début. Here's a short excerpt of an interview with him:

Interviewer: So how did your writer’s journey begin?

Jake: When my sister and I were much younger, my Mom would have us write from breakfast to lunch every day during summer vacation. Education is very important to my Mom who runs the education website http://spellingclassroom.com/. At first I hated the daily writing, but eventually I got into it and wrote about how my day was going and how I was feeling. I have my Mom to thank for my developing my love for writing.

Interviewer: Tell me about your motivational speaking at schools.

Jake: I love speaking to kids. I think a lot of young people are scared to write a book because they think they can’t do it, but let’s face it - It’s either “no” or your dreams come true. You have to be fearless and be passionate and take all the chances you have and do it with an open mind. Set a goal and it doesn’t have to be a huge goal. My goal was to get published, which is a pretty huge goal. If you are passionate about something, you can make money and make a career at it. Everything starts somewhere.
