Subject: News and Views from The TechLX

What a powerful celebration of IT leadership. On Monday, 60 emerging IT leaders graduated from the first two St. Louis cohorts of The TechLX, and it was an inspiring morning for all involved.

The cohort presentations highlighting their take-aways from the program were thoughtfully prepared and chock-full of insights. A CIO panel of executives from MiTek, Panera Bread, and Enterprise Fleet Management sparked our thinking with many valuable leadership nuggets.

We also had the opportunity to recognize the outstanding contribution of the award winners, including Leader Amongst Leaders Award winners John Heartlein of St. Louis University and Mike Luebbers of Vi-Jon; Mentoring Excellence Award winners Tushar Shelar of Murphy and Steve Schmidt of MiTek; and the Community Leadership Award winners, MiTek, Panera Bread, and Technology Partners.

Of course, graduation is just the beginning. These leaders are now moving on the next step in their journey, continuing to learn and build their networks while strengthening the local IT leadership community as ambassadors of the program. We can’t wait to hear about the great strides they take in the months and years to come.

Congratulations to all the graduates and award winners!

Spotlight on: IT SKILL BUILDER

The first step in becoming a highly effective leader is to learn and understand yourself. That’s why IT Skill Builder plays such an essential role in The TechLX process.

We’ve all faced challenges, overcome obstacles, or wanted to evolve into a new role. Growing leaders thrive when they can acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses, increase their self-awareness, and get a broader view of their role and what is expected both inside and outside the organization.

IT Skill Builder offers a comprehensive self-assessment of 14 core competencies that center on the “human factor” or “soft skills” (which we call Core Skills) that differentiate high-performing technology leaders and organizations. The TechLX kicks off with this self-assessment, identifying key strengths and opportunities that are then provided to the participant in a skill-gap report.

What’s particularly valuable in The TechLX is that both the participant and their manager complete the assessment. This gives them the opportunity to discuss the reports together and identify areas of growth, proficiency, and next steps. The information and data are also useful in mentoring and problem-solving sessions.

Take a closer look at how Skill Builder benefits:
The self-assessment is just the beginning. With more than 5,000 microlearning resources available within the Skill Builder platform, participants can build their career journey, close skill gaps, and develop new skills and interests.

Successful digital implementations are built on people more than technology, and companies running ahead of the pack are learning that business acumen, and even creative arts backgrounds, may provide what they need to compete. With the highest demand skills including teamwork (74% of respondents in a recent Infosys survey of 1000+ CIOs), leadership (70%), and communication (67%), the so-called soft skills have become more important than technical ones

In an era of continual business transformation, influence is a key leadership skill to lean on—one that must be developed and honed for success. But the ability to influence isn’t something that always comes naturally. For most of us, it’s something that must be developed and practiced.

From your involvement with The TechLX, you know what a powerful tool mentoring is, both for the mentor and the mentee. Here, some TechLX mentors, including Dane Bamburry, director of solutions architecture, identity & access management, and content management at Cox Enterprises, discuss how mentoring can help today’s IT executives leave behind a greater legacy while shaping the next generation of leaders who will continue the transformative journey.
