Veterans Day got me to thinking about war - as I did 60 years ago, in 1963, as a young reporter on a provincial New Zealand newspaper.
On November 22 that year (1963) President John F Kennedy was assassinated.
Seven months later, his brother, Senator Edward Kennedy, survived a plane crash.
In 1968, Robert Kennedy was assassinated - and "the curse of the Kennedys" became the media narrative.
Nor did I think, until now, that there might be some truth to the words of "conspiracy theorists" who would claim that John F Kennedy Jr staged his own death when the plane he was flying crashed into the Atlantic offshore from Martha's Vineyard on July 16, 1999.
What follows is a rough tapestry, in words and images that to my mind shed light on the dark ones who started their own demise when they laid a curse on the Kennedys - and spawned the movement known simply as Q. |
