Dear Colleagues,

I’d like to comment on a recent article on the “corporatization” of healthcare systems. Kaufman Hall’s managing director, Patrick Allen, said “Hospitals and health systems are facing extraordinary pressure to reduce costs, manage care more effectively across the continuum, and improve patient engagement and experience.” Plainly speaking, Nurses are being asked to do more with less!

Now more than ever, nurses need to learn about the opportunities and options to use their current nursing knowledge and credentials. For entrepreneurial nurses there is great opportunity in change management and integration consulting. Seventy-five percent of executives say that they are hiring consultants that are able to assist with these changes and integration. In 2016 we saw another increase in M & A activity and you can read the whole article below in this issue’s articles of interest.

For over 30 years, the NNBA has championed the notion of not putting all your eggs in one basket. It is necessary for today’s nurse to diversify income streams to protect the financial integrity of their careers. Implementation: Stop Waiting, Start Doing! Many would be entrepreneurs suffer from analysis paralysis where the desire for perfection can paralyze you. Over thinking and planning can result in burnout before you have even entered the marketplace. Make a start, get underway, and remember that you can always make adjustments.

At my last job as a recruiter, I would often interview people who lost their jobs from one week to the next.

It was during this time that I realized I had to always make sure I had money coming from different places, so I freelanced on the side of my day job and worked on a blog in the hopes of making some money from it someday.

While I didn't know it at the time, I'd figured out something most millionaires already know: you always need to have multiple sources of income.
I've been an entrepreneur for most of my life. I started an odd-jobs business in high school, founded a collectible comic-book business in college and launched my first capital-backed startup -- an adventure-travel company -- in my 20s.
My entrepreneurial endeavors continue today. I'm in my late 40s, running Red Rocket, looking for groups to buy and advising hundreds of early-stage businesses. My approach to managing businesses today is very different than when I was younger. The experience I now bring to the table has materially mellowed me as a leader. Read More
