Nurses and Entrepreneurship: Perfect Together
Business ownership is part of the American dream. And why not? It provides the opportunity to be your own boss, make your own hours, and have creative freedom, flexibility of time, and unlimited earning potential. And while the concept of “business” is foreign to many nurses, we actually make great entrepreneurs.
Nurses have what it takes to be successful in business. We’re smart, think on our feet, have excellent communication skills, are good listeners, and are versatile and adaptable. We’re hard working, ethical, and totally customer service oriented. We’re even good salespeople, every time you have to convince a patient to adhere to a regime or follow up on some tests, you’re selling! We also possess a great body of knowledge and experience that is marketable, valuable and in demand.

Donna Cardillo will be at #NNBA2017 with two terrific programs!

Hearing the word “networking” brings up images of elevator speeches, stiff interactions, trying to look busy on your phone, and awkward silences. After the initial introductions and “what do you do’s” you’re often feeling panicked to come up with the next intelligent open-ended question in an attempt to keep the dialogue going.

With all the stress and discomfort that networking events bring, they’re still the best way to put yourself out there and meet like minded colleagues and leads to help you grow your business or land your next job.

A caterpillar doesn’t morph into a butterfly by random chance, nor does a personal transformation randomly occur. Instead, both scenarios happen through a series of meticulous and orderly steps over a period of time.

When I was looking for a personal transformation, I tried various strategies that only led to more stress and worrying. Not seeing any progress, I started to let self-doubt creep into my mind, which led me to become even more unproductive.

Although it seems daunting to think about becoming someone that you’re currently not or learning a skill that seems impossible in this moment, transformations are essential for continual success and growth.
Michelle DeLizio Podlesni, RN is a woman whose name has been mentioned to me as being a mentor to several of the last innovators that I have interviewed for articles. These nurse innovators and entrepreneurs come from all walks of nursing and their paths have led them to Michelle who currently is the President of the National Nurses in Business Association. It speaks volumes to her character and love of nursing entrepreneurship that she takes the time and effort to personally encourage, listen, and advise those she meets. It is a privilege to tell the story of her journey of innovation that has led her to a lead role in a national organization that gathers and celebrates nurses who “think outside the box”.
About the NNBA
