President's Corner

February 1, 2024

Dear Nurses,

Welcome to the latest edition of NNBA News! Here are interesting statistics from MarketSplash on what motivated people to become small business owners and entrepreneurs in 2023: To become their own boss – 29%, Dissatisfaction with corporate life – 17%, To pursue their passion – 16%, The opportunity presented itself – 12%, Inspiration for new business – 9%, Not ready to retire – 7%, Laid-off, job outsourced or acquired – 7%. What motivates nurses are along the same lines except for higher percentages in Dissatisfaction (Burnout).

Every one of those reasons came into play during my 40 years as a nurse with my different ventures, and when speaking with nurses from all over the country, their reasons for wanting to start a business validate those stats. Nurses are motivated and reaching out for resources to make their entrepreneurial dreams their reality. We love connecting nurses to the resources within our membership such as the Nurses Business Training Modules, Toolkit and Marketing and Networking Opportunities. Our annual educational conference is an incredible time to meet nurse entrepreneurs and business owners in-person, collaborate, and build powerful relationships. You don’t want to miss this!

How to Build An Email List -The Right Way

Foundr

Email marketing isn’t dead—far from it. Google+: now that’s dead.

While social media platforms have come and gone, and channels like cable TV and radio have ebbed and flowed, email has remained strong. Email is fast approaching its 60th birthday, and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down.

But it’s easy to see why so many people believe it is, sending mass emails with little to no response.

If this sounds like you, I’ve got good and bad news. Email marketing isn’t dead, but your approach to it is.

The best part about email marketing is that you’re never too late to the game. While there’s a constant battle for top SEO rankings, and you’re likely too late to win big on Google stock, there’s never a bad time to start building an email list.

Tips for New Entreprneurs

All Business

No entrepreneur is truly starting from scratch if they're able to learn from the mistakes, realizations, and experiences of other startup founders who came before them. To help entrepreneurs in their startup journey, we asked 20 founders and CEOs to share wisdom they learned while launching and growing their businesses.

Startup tips for new entrepreneurs

1. Be prepared for unplanned challenges

"One thing I wish I had known before I started my first business is that things will rarely go according to plan. I firmly believe many new business leaders give up because their vision for how things ought to work falls through, and they get discouraged.

"The best thing you can do is to plan ahead. For example, keep some cash aside in case unexpected costs arise—and they will! You may also want to consider adopting a flexible schedule instead of making concrete dates and times for big projects. Hiccups will occur, and things may get delayed; don't let it bring you down. Instead, you should embrace the challenges that come your way by understanding that things rarely work out exactly how you expect and preparing accordingly."
