Exciting news out of Washington DC; the department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) is proposing a rule to grant full practice authority to Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) when they are acting within the scope of their VA employment. Full practice authority will help optimize access to VA health care by permitting APRNs to assess, diagnose, prescribe medications and interpret diagnostic tests. For example, the NNBA’s Nurse Entrepreneurship & Career Alternatives Conference and Membership Dues are tax deductible! “What Expenses Can I Write Off” is a quick read to understand several opportunities. I believe Nurses know quite a bit about “seeds of resilience” that Sheryl Sandberg spoke of so beautifully in her commencement address for UC Berkley. If you have a moment, this is a great read and there is a brief video clip from the speech. And, I highly recommend Success Magazines Best Sellers especially Strength Finders. It was a book we used in a group mentoring program that proved very valuable.
Nurse Entrepreneurship is growing and nurses in business are contributing in a big way to healthcare conversations, impact and delivery. | In addition to the same deductions taken by folks who are employed by others, you can also deduct most expenses related to doing your job. This includes office space, supplies, equipment, business use of your car and telephone, internet and so on.
Plus, if you work from home, you can deduct a percentage of your housing costs (including mortgage, taxes, utilities), based on the percentage of your home used as your workspace. This write off can be very valuable. The catch is that the space must be used exclusively and regularly for work. So the couch where you also sit to watch TV probably doesn’t count, but your home office will.
