Subject: Announcing NNBA Business Advisory Board ~ NNBA

Presidents Corner                           June 1, 2015

New Business
Welcome to our new newsletter format. We hope you like the change and how it will render with the different browser applications. Let us know what you think and as always, we appreciate receiving your feedback. This new format will also give you an initial look at our updated logo design. I wanted the new design to convey the foundational concepts that support the NNBA. First the cyclical nature of the nursing process and critical thinking skills that complements business life cycles and business planning. The emphasis on the two central letters accentuate Nurses and Business then the upward arrow illustrates NNBA is continually moving forward. From the new newsletter format to our revamped logo; there has been a lot of activity at the NNBA. May was a remarkable month for new members coming on board and we continue to see registrations for what promises to be an excellent annual conference!
NNBA Business Advisory Board
My plan for the NNBA is to continually provide value for nurses; our members and prospective members. A vital part of that plan is the recent formation of NNBA Business Advisory Board. I am honored to announce the following individuals that will be serving on NNBA’s Business Advisory Board and a detailed Press Release here: http://www.mygtn.tv/story/29181282/national-nurses-in-business-association-nnba-announces-newly-appointed-business-advisory-board

Member Spotlight & New Opportunity
Dr. Mary Mason, one of NNBA’s recent Sponsor Members, is the founder of Little Medical Schools®. I really enjoyed learning about this program and realized that it filled a need with our youth today. I was telling Mary that this past February I spoke at my daughter’s middle school about the unlimited opportunities in the Nursing Profession. I tried finding Future Nursing Clubs like the one I belonged to in high school and sadly, I could not find any. I think you will enjoy learning about this program and it is in the Member Spotlight below!
Unconventionally yours,

Michelle

Should you spend some time developing a plan for your business, or just dive in and start, figuring things out as you go? There has been plenty of debate on this topic, but no one has pulled together the scientific evidence to determine if planning is worthwhile--until now.
Over the past few months, with the help of my friend Jeff, from the University of Oregon, I've been looking at academic research on business planning--the actual science around planning and how it impacts both startups and existing businesses.

There you are, sitting across the table from a frustrating situation—he wants one thing (say, vanilla ice cream), and you want something else (swirl, duh). You're about to begin what could be a heated negotiation. So how do you approach it? How do you smooth talk your way to sweet, swirlin' success?
Whether you're trying to convince someone of what ice cream flavor to order, or you're hammering out a more serious business contract, negotiating is never easy breezy. And as much as you'd like to think of yourself as an expert...

Steve Ballmer is a maniac. Just days into the new year, the rookie owner of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers took the internet by storm when he leaped from his courtside seat at Staples Center and began wildly gyrating to the music of halftime performer Fergie—a dance described by media outlets as “whacked out,” “hilariously insane” and “enraged and ecstatic all at the same time.”
The spectacle was nothing new to anyone who recalls Ballmer’s 14-year tenure as Microsoft CEO: Bill Gates' handpicked successor was a notoriously towering...

NNBA Members Spotlight
Dr. Mary Mason
Founder of Little Medical School®

Little Medical School® was founded in 2011 and is based in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Mary Mason, a board-certified internist, created this “mini-medical school” over 15 years ago in order to encourage grade-school students to take an interest in the healthcare field as a career and to promote healthy lifestyles.

The mission of Little Medical School is to inspire children to aspire to careers in health care such as medicine, nursing and pharmacy. The curriculum has been utilized as after-school programs, day programs, summer camps, birthday parties and special programs in schools, hospitals and community organizations. Over 6000 students are graduates of Little Medical School in the St. Louis, Springfield, MO and Southern Illinois regions. In 2013, the program expanded to include middle school students as part of STEM programming. In 2014, a pre-school/kindergarten program was introduced. Little Nursing School and Little Pharmacy School, based on the proven model, are now being offered in 2015.

Little Medical School is a sponsored program of the Signature Healthcare Foundation, also based in the St. Louis, MO. The Foundation received a Healthy Living Grant from the American Medical Association in 2014 to offer our unique programming to kids in need in the St. Louis area.

One key part of the program is to have students dress up and role-play being a doctor, nurse or pharmacist. This helps to reinforce the aspiration of having a career in health care. Students enrolled in the program will receive a white coat or scrub top and a medical tool such as a stethoscope, penlight or reflex hammer. Crafts, games, songs and interactive exercises are used to challenge students to learn key medical concepts. For example at the end of course, a graduation ceremony is held. Here, each child will take the Little Medical School Oath (modeled after the Hippocratic Oath) and receive their diploma. Graduates of the Little Nursing Schools program take an oath based on the Florence Nightingale Oath and participate in a pinning ceremony. They also learn our themed song and sing at graduation.

Current offerings include three courses for Little Medical School, each made of six unique classes. Additionally we offer a six-week course in Little Nursing School and Little Pharmacy School. There is also a weeklong summer camp offered that covers 30 hours of programming and Girl Scout Badge programs. Learn more about Little Medical School here www.littlemedicalschool.com.
