Susquehanna University honored with inaugural Hank Nuwer Award for Hazing Prevention
The Northeast Greek Leadership Association is proud to announce the establishment of the Hank Nuwer Award for Hazing Prevention and to recognize the inaugural winner, Susquehanna University. Emily Perlow, Executive Director of NGLA states, “When Hank announced his retirement from managing hazing reporting and tracking this fall, the entire fraternity and sorority community felt a void. His scholarship, advocacy, and championship for hazing prevention has made a lasting impact on the world and it’s up to others now to pick up the torch he has long carried. The board members for the Northeast Greek Leadership Association want to both honor Hank and continue his legacy by creating this important recognition. Additionally, NGLA has made a commitment to ensure our future programming always offers hazing prevention strategies and education.”

Hank Nuwer is a Professor of Journalism at Franklin College. He has made a lasting impact on the fraternity/sorority community with his scholarship and advocacy. He has authored several books on the topic of hazing in society including Hazing: Destroying Young Lives, Wrongs of Passage, High School Hazing, Broken Pledges, and The Hazing Reader. Hank also maintains the Hazing Deaths database. Furthermore, Hank is a member of Sigma Tau Rho, founding board member of HazingPrevention.org, and member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society for Investigative Reporters & Editors.

The Hank Nuwer Award for Hazing Prevention recognizes a campus community, campus volunteer, campus chapter, student leader, campus professionals, national organization staff member or volunteer, or community member that has made a significant contribution to hazing prevention in the Northeast.

At the 2019 NGLA Annual Conference, Susquehanna University received the inaugural Hank Nuwer Award for Hazing Prevention. The Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council at Susquehanna University acted following the untimely passing of Timothy Piazza from Penn State. The community organized a Walk to End Hazing and donated all proceeds to the Timothy J. Piazza Memorial Foundation, which provides support to those in need of prosthetic devices, particularly children. The fraternity/sorority community united and walked around a track bordered with bags of the names of those who have passed away due to a hazing incident within the last 40 years. These bags were filled with glow sticks to show that their legacy lives on. During this event, participants gathered around the track and read statistics related to hazing. Together, Susquehanna University raised $1,000 for the Timothy J. Piazza Memorial Foundation.

Congratulations to the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council at Susquehanna University. Thank you for your determination to end hazing. We are so proud to honor Hank’s legacy with this award.
