Welcome Back from the Executive Director
I ask a lot of questions. It’s how I’m able to fully understand those around me and make sense of the world, a challenge for certain. One question that I’ve been asking colleagues and our NGLA family is, “What are you looking forward to this fall?” At the expense of sounding like a stereotypical millennial, fall is an exciting time - especially across the Northeast. Whether it's the return to campus and reunion of friends, football, the cool, crisp air in the morning, or your favorite seasonal treat, fall offers each of us a special opportunity to push forward and execute after a summer of reflection and relaxation.
And yet, the answers I’ve received, though thoughtful and authentic, were clouded by hesitancy; and that hesitancy, sparked by fear. These feelings are almost universal to anybody affiliated with a college or university at this moment in time. They’re powerful and real.
This past year has challenged each of us, and the coming months will certainly provide its fair share of obstacles to navigate. As the school year commences, now is the time to take that much needed deep breath, hold it, and release our energy toward a purpose.
This summer, the NGLA Board of Directors engaged in quite a few lengthy conversations regarding our purpose. This topic led to a necessary reckoning of our organization’s role within the broader context of society. Mainly, what are we doing to meet the needs of today?
We evaluated trends affecting higher education due to COVID-19, considered the ways we can better serve students and professionals in new mediums, and continued to explore ways to both expand and strengthen our operations. In the coming year, with our purpose at the forefront of our minds, you will experience new and exciting additions to NGLA; including new educational opportunities as well as a shift in our organizational structure.
None of what we do would be possible without the tremendous support from our volunteers. I would like to take a moment to recognize our volunteer team who keep us going with their time, talent, and belief in our mission. We could not continue to grow, advance, and evolve without the tireless dedication of many.
As we venture into the fall, a new academic year, and a new age, it is my hope that the evolution of NGLA can assist in fostering a sense of purpose for each of the communities we serve across the Northeast (and beyond!). What are ways we can help you identify and achieve your goals? Let us know how we can better serve you. I’d love to hear from you — email me anytime at exec@ngla.org.
Best wishes for the start of another year!
Sincerely,
|

Health & Safety Policy: 2022 NGLA Annual Conference
In an effort to prioritize the health & safety of our attendees and the communities around us, NGLA will require all individuals who are attending the In-Person Experience of the 2022 NGLA Annual Conference in Baltimore, MD to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Vaccination status will be verified prior to arriving on-site. NGLA will make exemptions for religious and medical purposes.
NGLA will work with each institution that has a mandatory vaccination policy to verify attendance eligibility based on the institution's respective policy, including those with religious and medical exemptions. All exempted individuals must provide proof of a negative PCR test for COVID-19 upon arrival. More information will be provided in November.

Volunteer of the Month for April - Cory Bosco and Tommy Severin
Cory Bosco returned as the Technology Chair for 2021 knowing that it would involve a significantly expanded role in planning for the Virtual Conference. Joining him on the Technology Team in the newly created Assistant Chair position was Tommy Severin. Cory and Tommy tackled an incredible amount of work to support an exceptional experience for attendees, volunteers, presenters, and sponsors. Leading up to the conference, they trained Student Staff members to serve as virtual program hosts, established internal protocols and guides, offered practice sessions to presenters, uploaded content, and granted attendee access to Whova, and developed content seen throughout the conference. During the conference, they responded rapidly to attendee questions and resolved issues promptly. As if all of that wasn't enough, Cory and Tommy assisted with uploading the session recordings as well as compiling and analyzing engagement information. The 2021 Virtual Conference would not have been possible without and was greatly enhanced by Cory and Tommy's teamwork, skills, and patience.
