The Bonnie Wunsch/NGLA Scholarship Endowment has Been Fully Funded!

In 2011, the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors honored long-time NGLA board member, Bonnie Wunsch, with the Sue Kraft Fussell Distinguished Service Award. NGLA seized the opportunity to further recognize Bonnie by creating the Bonnie Wunsch/NGLA Scholarship Endowment through the AFA Foundation. We are pleased to announce that our endowment is now fully funded! This scholarship will fund an AFA Annual Meeting registration for a professional member residing in the Northeast.

“Funding this scholarship has been a huge labor of love for the NGLA Board and represents the fellowship that exists in the Northeast. So many of us have enjoyed working with, and learning from, Bonnie. She represents what it means to be a life-long committed professional. The Foundation Board recognizes that many people and organizations have contributed to this fund. Some gave a lot and some threw a few dollars into an envelope at a Region I meeting,” says Amy Vojta, AFA Foundation Chair.

She further states, “They did it because they believed in a colleague, believed in the value of her work and believed they could make a difference in another professional’s life by affording them the opportunity to attend the Annual Meeting. We are excited to offer this scholarship to future attendees and we thank the NGLA Board, and all who made contributions, for their support.”

We are thrilled to be the first regional organization to establish such an endowment to support the professional development of the campus-based and headquarters-based staff in our area who invest so much of themselves in the development of our fraternity/sorority members and communities. Stay tuned for a future announcement about applying for the Bonnie Wunsch/NGLA Scholarship.

Volunteer of the Month

Congratulations to our September Volunteer of the Month, Brittany Scancarella. Brittany is our newly placed monthly Newsletter Editor and a second year volunteer for NGLA. When asked "who we should nominate as this month’s Volunteer of the Month, the answer was a no-brainer,” shared NGLA Board member Tiffany Neal. “Brittany has really stepped up to assist us during this transition period to our new volunteer process. The newsletter and overall communication plan for NGLA would not happen without her.” Emily Perlow, NGLA Board member, also enthusiastically shared that, “Brittany is always on top of her game when it comes to volunteering for NGLA. She is thorough, creative, and has offered several ideas to help appeal to more audiences. I’m so glad we have her on our NGLA volunteer team!” Please join us in offering a round of applause to Brittany! This award is truly deserved.
Don’t Pack the Scissors! Thinking about Recruitment Now & Later

If you’ve ever moved, you may have had this experience. You arrive at your new residence and unload all of your neatly packed boxes into your new space. Now it’s time to unpack and set up your new home, but you realize you have no way to open up the sealed boxes because you’ve packed the scissors in one of them! Now you need to come up with a less efficient way to open the boxes until you find the box where the scissors are packed- causing you to spend more time and energy on the task at hand.

Sound familiar? With any large event, these “don’t pack the scissors” moments are bound to occur. Surely, your fraternity or sorority has hosted a recruitment event where the scissors were “packed." It happens at almost every large scale event! We always think of what we could have or should have done next time in the heat of the moment. In fraternities and sororities, this can be amplified when we look at our recruitment events. Often, the recruitment officer has a great idea for improvement or immediately following the function, but they do not coordinate the next year’s event, causing a cycle in which improvements could be stalemated.

This is another example of how organizations should consider recruitment in terms of a perpetual process, but it also brings to light the importance of strong officer transition and training. Ready to break the cycle? Here is a list of items to keep in your officer binder so you don’t forget key details:

  • Create a Space for “Brain Dumping”- During the hectic moments of a big recruitment event, it can be hard to keep track of all the suggestions that come your way from your chapter members. Utilize technology to assist you: a thread in your Facebook group Google Doc shared among chapter members or officers can work well and provide mobile options for members and officers to make notes, observations, and provide for some suggestions for the future event. Just be sure to designate it as a safe space for constructive criticism and growth, not complaints!
  • Become A Better Mentor - You likely have some sort of mentoring relationship within your organization, perhaps through a big/little relationship, academic mentorship, or other internal bonding, but take a look around! Your chapter is probably filled with members who have qualities already making them predisposed to certain officer positions in the future. Gather these members together and utilize them as a committee for your function area. A recruitment committee, for example, can be exposed to some of the preparation and post event tasks, which allows them to add their own insight, or maybe suggest an alternate way to do something. Having several members focused on completing one task can alleviate the tunnel vision that you might have as the officer, but also expose younger members to the ins and outs of the job, making them stronger candidates for the role in the future.
  • Observe and Critique Yourself - This one can be really hard, but its incredibly important. After your recruitment events are over, take the time to jot down an honest list of the things you thought went well and why as well as the things that did not run so smoothly and some suggestions for the future.

Taking the time to organize, review, and re-evaluate your recruitment efforts and including the chapter in this process will allow for smoother transitions of officers and an increased interest in a recruitment leadership role in the future!
