Commencement thoughts to ponder
By Patty Gesell

Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the musical Hamilton delivered the commencement address at University of Pennsylvania.

“The stories you are about to live are the ones you will be telling your children and grandchildren and therapists.”
“They are the cities you live in before the opportunity of a lifetime pops up halfway across the world.”
“They are the relationships in which you hang on for dear life even as your shoulder cracks in protest.”
“They are the times you say no to the good opportunities so you can say yes to the best opportunities.”
“There will be moments you remember and whole years you forget.”
“There will be blind alleys and one-night wonders and soul-crushing jobs and wake-up calls and crises of confidence and moments of transcendence when you are walking down the street and someone will thank you for telling your story because it resonated with their own.”
As you take time this summer to reflect on this past year ask yourself these questions.
Deferred Recruitment: Making the Change Through Transparency and Buy In
By Matthew R. Richardson, Ed.D., Coordinator of Fraternity & Sorority Life, University of Pittsburgh

At the NGLA Annual Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, a team from the University of Pittsburgh presented a case study analysis of the institution’s recent switch to deferred recruitment. The team—made up of the Presidents and Vice Presidents of Recruitment of the Interfraternity Council and Collegiate Panhellenic Council, along with the campus-based professional—identified the rationale for the change in membership intake, while providing real data points and statistical trends that made the change compelling. Then, the student leaders discussed the challenges they faced as they worked collaboratively with headquarters and institutional partners in ensuring the continued growth and success of the chapters. Ultimately, the team stated their dislike for the term “deferred recruitment,” as the University was not codifying the relationships students can have with one another. Recruitment is constant—all the new policy did was to defer membership. There’s a significant difference.
June Volunteer of the Month – Wendi Kinney

NGLA would like to recognize Wendi Kinney as the June 2016 Volunteer of the Month. Wendi has served on the NGLA Board of Directors for the past 11 years. In her most recent role of Executive Director, Wendi has really taken the organization to the next level.

She serves as a role model and friend to many of us. Her passion and knowledge for the fraternity/sorority movement is unparalleled.

A few of the NGLA Board Members shared their thoughts of this amazing leader below:

"Wendi has stewarded our organization from being a board who plans a conference to include more than 100 volunteers with a board who considers strategic objectives. Her time, dedication, and vision are what has helped NGLA be what it is today." - Emily Perlow

"Wendi really drove NGLA toward a new vision of engaging the talent in the Northeast through a dynamic volunteer structure. Her leadership to establish and develop this structure is what has allowed us to perpetuate and advance the good work that NGLA does to advance fraternal communities in the Northeast. Wendi's leadership truly inspired a movement." - Dave Conner

“Wendi is an exceptional talent. She is a one woman show on her campus. A campus that continues to tout growth and excellence in programming. Wendi is even-tempered, a staunch advocate for fraternity and sorority, a seasoned volunteer for organizations like NGLA, and a trusted expert in our field." - Kara Miller

The Volunteer Leadership Team cannot think of a better way to send Wendi in NGLA Retirement than recognizing her with this award. Wendi, thank you for all you have done for all of us and NGLA. You are truly remarkable.
