Why Your Student May Get Rejected From a Safety School

A "yield rate" is not something that only a cookie baker is concerned about. Colleges also pay attention to that number.

It's the number of students that wind up attending.

Their concern makes sense, since they want to accept as many students as they can who really WILL attend their school, and reject the rest.

So, if they get wind of the fact that your child is not all that keen on attending, they won't accept.

Also called "Tufts Syndrome," this is practiced by a number of other schools as well.

What's Your Loan IQ?

Understanding the differences between private and federal loans is important even if you only think you might need them to help pay college tuition.

There are options to learn about and many nuances that families don't often consider.

And having a handle on all of this earlier rather than later can have a big impact on lowering stress levels when the time comes to make a final decision.

Let's start with the differences between Parent PLUS and private loans here.

Help! My Son's Got Senioritis, What Can I Do?

Members of our Paying For College 101 Facebook group reach out to the other group members all the time...and in addition to seeking advice about paying for college, they ask for parenting help as well.

Here's how some responded to a mom's question about how to keep her son on track during these last few months of high school...

"I would make sure they find out exactly what they need to maintain for their grades to keep their admission into the school they were accepted to and then as long as they kept their grades to that level I would cut them some slack.
Senioritis is a phenomenon even during less stressful times and even more so with students who are on zoom all the time. As long as they are doing enough to be able to move on to college let it be. Set a compromise that as long as they are maintaining those grades you will not give them a hard time."

"Use a countdown calendar to the end...we have less than 100 days left"

"Maybe just take a weekend to relax and have fun.
Get out in nature if the weather allows. Go for a walk in the forest or along the beach. Order food all weekend from their favorite restaurants, play board games, watch movies together, do ridiculous silly things - make them laugh a ton.
Show them life is fun and hit the reset button!
Don’t talk about school - just have fun that will relax and recharge.
Best of luck!"
